Beitske VISSER – CIK-FIA, Sarno ( I ) – Beitske Visser on the Front Row!

Kartlink - Sun, 04/18/2010 - 19:01

A place on the first row in one of the most coveted European karting
Championships of the season: this is the new excellent result obtained
by Beitske Visser. This young Dutch girl continues to be a revelation
at international level, at each single meeting she attends.

The media, teams and observers keep a close eye on Beitske Visser's
progress (Intrepid/TM by Tec-Sav) and are increasingly interested in
her performance. Her burst of speed, coupled with personality and
determination, cannot but command respect, even admiration. "I have
set some objectives for myself and I am really determined to achieve
them" Beitske explained. "That is why I am totally focussed on the
race as soon as I reach the circuit".

True, in karting, just like in car racing, you have to show a high
level of commitment to succeed and make progress. At only 15, this
Dutch driver has already learned that lesson and she is now trying to
stack all the odds in her favour. Physical training, technical meeting
with her team, execution of the best possible adjustments: she leaves
nothing to chance in the KZ2 category (125cc gearbox engines), where
she has to face a bunch of much more experienced drivers. "Climbing on
the second step of the podium at the end of March, in Lonato, at the
WSK Euro Series round... that was really awesome. So I arrived at the
European Championship highly motivated".

Beitske had just three races to get ready before this important
European event, held on 10 and 11 April, but that did not prevent her
from setting the best time in free practice. With its series of fast,
hairpin bends and its long straight stretches, the international
circuit of Naples, in Sarno, was highly selective. Despite the
subtleties of this long track, she completed an excellent official
qualifying session and set the second best time. Her performance
closely resembled that of her pole position at the Andrea Margutti
trophy, three weeks earlier.

"Knowing that I would start from the first row in the qualifying
heats, with so many drivers (75), well ... that was great. But I also
knew that I'd have more pressure on me. Then I found myself in front
of the lights, with no reference point ahead of me! But it was a good
feeling". Beitske concluded a clean qualifying session (with a victory
in one heat), despite the high number of drivers (all male) going
after her. Unfortunately, rain began to fall just before the final
phase and her podium dreams slipped away.

"I like driving in the rain, but it got really difficult in Sarno
because grip conditions changed too fast. I felt at ease at the
beginning of race 1, but the track dried and my adjustments were no
longer suitable. In race 2, we changed our rain tyres with the slick
ones, by the track grip was not the same as in the morning. The
chassis was more difficult to drive, so I focussed on maintaining my
place".

But Beitske Visser had the satisfaction to collect her first points,
thanks to her 11th and 13th place in the following races. "I have a
good pace going and I have gathered more experience" the promising
Dutch driver concluded.

MSA TO PROVIDE BURSARIES FOR TEAM UK DRIVERS

Kartlink - Sun, 04/18/2010 - 18:58

The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has confirmed that a bursary of up
to £10,000 will be made available for all members of the MSA Team UK
national squad this year.

As part of the governing body’s commitment to the newly unveiled
programme, the four rally and six race drivers will be able to apply
for the funding from the MSA to assist with their living costs and day
to day expenses.

“In the past five years, we have seen drivers on our schemes holding
down full-time jobs while trying to become professional sportsmen,”
explains Robert Reid, MSA Performance Director. “We have looked at the
Olympic funding model and feel that this could have a significant
impact on the ability of our drivers to focus on their career goals.
But in return, we are demanding increased commitment and dedication
from the drivers; if they don’t shape up, we will have no qualms this
year about dropping them from the scheme.”

“This represents a further development of the MSA’s commitment to
talent development,” advises Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive.
“Thanks to the MSA Academy framework that forms part of the Whole
Sport Plan, we are able to attract new partners to help us deliver a
number of new initiatives at both grass roots and elite levels. We are
grateful to the Racing Steps Foundation whose support as the first of
our partners has enabled the MSA to enhance the current projects and
extend their impact.”

“Without doubt the biggest cause of stress in my life is about money,”
says Cooper Tires British F3 International Series driver and Team UK
member James Calado. “It is easy to assume that because we have to
find huge budgets to run the cars, we must have plenty of spare cash
for daily life. But when you are worrying about finding a tenner to
put fuel in the car to go training, that is obviously going to have an
adverse effect on performance. I can’t begin to explain just what a
difference this bursary will make and it will enable me to focus even
harder on success this year.”

The Team UK drivers must make a formal application for the bursary
funding and detail what it will be used for, so that the MSA can
assess their individual needs. In order to qualify for the monthly
payments, drivers will be required to satisfy several criteria that
include the carrying of logos and decals, attendance at training
events and full engagement with the Team UK scheme and coaches.

Editor’s notes:

MSA Team UK is the creation of a national squad of the country’s most
promising race and rally drivers and represents the pinnacle of the
MSA Academy structure that guides young drivers from eight years old
through to world championship level. Team UK is operated by Brabham
Performance Clinic under the direction of MSA Performance Director
Robert Reid, with specific expertise provided by 2009 Le Mans champion
David Brabham as National Race Coach and three-time British Rally
Champion Mark Higgins as National Rally Coach.

The Team UK drivers for 2010 are: William Buller; James Calado;
Alastair Fisher; Adam Gould; Martin McCormack; Alexander Sims; Will
Stevens; Harry Tincknell; Oliver Webb; Dave Weston Jr.

In recent years the MSA has expanded its remit to cover the
development of the sport and currently invests in excess of £1m a year
in the three elements of its Whole Sport Plan. ‘Grow’ targets an
increase in participation levels, ‘Sustain’ invests in the
infrastructure of the sport, its clubs and its people, and ‘Excel’
focuses on training future world champions and educating their peers.

MSA LAUNCHES ITS MANIFESTO FOR MOTOR SPORT

Kartlink - Sun, 04/18/2010 - 18:55

The Motor Sports Association – governing body of UK motor sport – has
unveiled a manifesto that will form the basis of the MSA's Public
Affairs activity for this year. The manifesto highlights three key
issues that the MSA will be looking to discuss with government during
2010 at private meetings, high profile events and the party
conferences in the autumn.

The three issues for discussion are closed road events; planning laws;
and motor sport as an environmental test bed.

The MSA is now calling on its 50,000 members to sign an online
petition to support the call for Closed Road events on mainland
Britain without the need to resort to an Act of Parliament to suspend
the Road Traffic Act at www.petition.co.uk/MSA.

The manifesto has been launched publicly in order to provide guidance
and information for those members of the motor sport community who may
wish to discuss the sport with Prospective Parliamentary Candidates
(PPCs) in the forthcoming general election campaign.

The MSA manifesto is available online at www.msauk.org/manifesto along
with a draft letter that can be downloaded and sent to PPCs or MPs to
make the case for motor sport. Also available online are the combined
manifestos from the other members of the Motorsport Alliance – the
Auto-Cycle Union and the MIA – providing a consolidated guide to the
needs of four- and two-wheeled motor sport and the associated
industry.

Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive:
“The MSA has made great strides in the past 18 months with its Public
Affairs campaign, raising the profile of the sport and highlighting
our development programmes to key ministers and shadows. The 2010
manifesto sets out our strategic priorities for the coming year, but
can also be a useful tool for any of our members that might like to
make the case for motor sport to their MPs and PPCs. We would
particularly encourage everyone to demonstrate the level of support
for closed road events by signing the petition at
www.petition.co.uk/MSA.”

In 2008 the MSA appointed Bell Pottinger to lead its Public Affairs
campaign to raise the profile of motor sport within Westminster and
the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The past 18 months have seen a significant improvement in the sport’s
profile within government as a result of high profile meetings, Select
Committee appearances and the hosting of fringe meetings at both
Labour and Conservative party conferences.

Julie TONELLI – CIK-FIA, Sarno ( I ) – Coup d’éclat napolitain pour Iglesias

Kartlink - Sun, 04/18/2010 - 18:47

(Intrepid/TM).

Quaife-Hobbs impresses in F3 Euroseries opener

Kartlink - Mon, 04/12/2010 - 22:36

Adrian Quaife-Hobbs got his 2010 season off to a good start with a
storming drive through the field from 11th to sixth in the opening
round of the 2010 Formula 3 Euroseries at Paul Ricard this weekend.
The Tonbridge racer, along with his Motopark Academy team-mates, was
penalised for an engine change between qualifying and the race,
dropping him down the grid.

Despite that, the 19 year-old, making his debut in the series, drove a
superb race gaining three places on the opening lap. Later in the race
Valtteri Bottas was awarded a drive through penalty elevating Adrian
to seventh.

Over the closing laps Adrian closed up to Jim Pla and a superb
slipstreaming move on the final lap allowed him to surge ahead and
into sixth place which he held to the flag.

The weekend’s second race featured a reverse grid and saw Adrian line
up third. A fantastic getaway allowed him to get the jump off the
line, entering the first corner in second place. However his progress
was short-lived as over the course of the remaining laps as he slipped
to ninth at the flag.

“It was an eventful opening event particularly on a circuit that is
unknown to me and the team,” said Adrian. “We struggled for pace all
weekend and the team worked hard to try and resolve it. And I’m sure
we’ll be back on pace next time out in Hockenheim.

“But to get sixth on my debut in F3 isn’t bad. To be the quickest of
the Motopark drivers is also a good result for me personally and I’m
confident of being able to improve on sixth place next time out.”
Adrian will return to racing action in the next double header rounds
of the series which take place at Hockenheim in Germany in two weeks
time.
