Quaife-Hobbs impresses in F3 Euroseries opener

Mon, 04/12/2010 - 22:36

Adrian Quaife-Hobbs got his 2010 season off to a good start with a
storming drive through the field from 11th to sixth in the opening
round of the 2010 Formula 3 Euroseries at Paul Ricard this weekend.
The Tonbridge racer, along with his Motopark Academy team-mates, was
penalised for an engine change between qualifying and the race,
dropping him down the grid.

Despite that, the 19 year-old, making his debut in the series, drove a
superb race gaining three places on the opening lap. Later in the race
Valtteri Bottas was awarded a drive through penalty elevating Adrian
to seventh.

Over the closing laps Adrian closed up to Jim Pla and a superb
slipstreaming move on the final lap allowed him to surge ahead and
into sixth place which he held to the flag.

The weekend’s second race featured a reverse grid and saw Adrian line
up third. A fantastic getaway allowed him to get the jump off the
line, entering the first corner in second place. However his progress
was short-lived as over the course of the remaining laps as he slipped
to ninth at the flag.

“It was an eventful opening event particularly on a circuit that is
unknown to me and the team,” said Adrian. “We struggled for pace all
weekend and the team worked hard to try and resolve it. And I’m sure
we’ll be back on pace next time out in Hockenheim.

“But to get sixth on my debut in F3 isn’t bad. To be the quickest of
the Motopark drivers is also a good result for me personally and I’m
confident of being able to improve on sixth place next time out.”
Adrian will return to racing action in the next double header rounds
of the series which take place at Hockenheim in Germany in two weeks
time.

Mitchell Gilbert finished ninth in first British race at PF International Kart Circuit

Sat, 04/10/2010 - 09:28

JRP Energy Racing Team driver Mitchell Gilbert competed in his first
British event this weekend, finishing ninth in the fourth round of the
TVKC Club Championship at the PF International Kart Circuit on Sunday
4 April.

Over 120 drivers competed during the weekend in a three heat – one
final format with Mitchell going head to head with scores of British
drivers who have spent their lives competing at the Lincolnshire based
circuit.  Despite struggling with a lack of grip on a slippery track
surface and a completely different race format the Australian driver
was still able to lap within two tenths of a second of the race
leaders.

Mitchell will now return to PF International for additional testing
before the CIK-FIA European KF2 Championship Western Region
Qualifications taking place from 29 April – 2 May.

Fraser Sheader, Mitchell Gilbert's Manager, said:
“This weekend was disappointing but Mitchell’s speed potential was
still very good.  We have a lot of work to do before the Euro
Qualifications at the end of the month. I’m still confident however
that our speed will be there when it matters.”

Mitchell is now focussing on the next WSK Euro Series event in Zuera,
Spain taking place from 15 – 18 April. Back on familiar tyres and
track, Mitchell has his sights set on a podium finish.

ATECH GP WINS THRUXTON FORMULA RENAULT THRILLER

Sat, 04/10/2010 - 08:36

Atech Grand Prix won the opening round of the Michelin Formula Renault
UK Championship at Thruxton with Tamás Pál Kiss taking his and the
team’s maiden Formula Renault victory.  Nick Yelloly made another of
his lightening starts to move up into sixth from tenth while Marlon
Stockinger rounded out the top ten to also gain valuable championship
points.

Starting from fourth, Pál Kiss managed to avoid a first lap collision
which claimed two cars and sent out the safety car, crossing the line
second at the end of the lap. At the restart, Tamás was the quickest
on track, quickly closing down the gap to the race leader and on lap
seven the Hungarian forged ahead and into the lead, extending his
advantage to three seconds at the finish.

In Sunday’s race two, 18 year-old Pál Kiss drove another superb race,
storming through from tenth on the grid to seventh on the opening lap.
A stunning overtaking manoeuvre on lap seven allowed him to pass two
cars and move into fifth.

Two laps from home a mistake from fourth-placed Tom Blomqvist allowed
Pál Kiss through and in to fourth place which he held to the flag.
His combined results put him into second place in the championship,
just six points behind the leader.

Eighteen year-old Yelloly again made a fantastic start to leapfrog six
cars off the line and a controlled drive over the course of the
16-lapper netted the Briton 11th at the finish and puts him sixth in
the championship. Swiss-Filipino Stockinger, celebrating his 19th
birthday on Sunday, also made a good start and recovered well from
being pushed off track at the mid-way point to cross the line 15th.

“For me this was the perfect start to my championship and I’m very
happy to give the new team its first Formula Renault win,” said Tamás.
“The car was great this weekend and the team once again did a
fantastic, professional job.”

Team Principal David Hayle was equally pleased with the results, the
first victory for the new team, re-named for 2010.  “This weekend is
the first for the team under the Atech Grand Prix name so it’s great
to kick off the season with victory.

“Tamás has driven superbly all weekend, following a strong pre-season
testing performance and I’m delighted that he got his reward with
victory.  The whole team has worked hard during the off-season and the
results of Nick and Marlon also reflect that.

“Nick’s two race finishes also put him in a strong position, sixth in
the championship, and I know the results will continue to come from
him.  Marlon was unlucky this weekend as his pre-season pace prior to
Thruxton was strong and I’m sure he will continue to make progress for
the next rounds.”

The Silverstone-based team will resume race action at the next two
rounds of the championship, which take place at Rockingham in two
weeks time.

With the sun shining down on the Cumbrian venue the Cadets staged the
race of the weekend, Aston soon finding himself shuffled down the
order as a group of 15 karts circulated together with positions
changing almost at every corner.

Eventually Welsh Champion Tom Harvey dived underneath TJ Nelson on the
